Mario Rafael Gaztambide, Sr., of West Hartford, beloved husband of Jacqueline Acevedo de Gaztambide, passed away Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at St. Francis Hospital with his family by his side. Born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, May 24, 1940, son of Lourdes Gomez de Gaztambide, of San Juan, Puerto Rico and the late Jose Rafael Gaztambide.
Mario was a loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, brother-in-law, cousin and teacher. Besides his wife and mother, Mario is survived by his sons, Mario Gaztambide and his wife, Hilary of West Hartford and Karl Gaztambide of Miami, Florida, grandchildren, Mario Liam Gaztambide and Ana Isabel Gaztambide, brothers, Paul Gaztambide of Florida, Peter Gaztambide of Florida, Jose Gaztambide of Puerto Rico and sister, Maria de Lourdes Cintron of Puerto Rico.
Mario dedicated his life to his family and the education of his students who he held so close. Mario was the headmaster at Dorado Academy in Dorado, Puerto Rico prior to coming to New Britain where he served as a bilingual teacher at the Smalley School and a consultant for the Consolidated School District in New Britain. After retiring he served as an education consultant for the Government in Puerto Rico and as a realtor in the West Hartford/New Britain area.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, October 1, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. in the Cathedral of Saint Joseph, 140 Farmington Avenue, Hartford.
