Lifelong resident and Certified Public Accountant George Arthur Kanehl Senior died quietly in his sleep Sunday night July 5, 2015, at age 86. George was a well-respected Manchester businessman who touched many lives with his advice and humor. He had been battling with cancer for the past few years. George was a fixture in town dedicated to various organizations and clubs. He long served as treasurer for the Manchester Elks Lodge # 1893 B.P.O.E while becoming a lifetime member and was an active Mason with Manchester Lodge #73 A.F. & A.M. for over 50 years. Besides these two organizations, George was also involved in the Manchester Midget Football League, the town Republican Committee, and VFW Post 2046. His advice and quiet business habits influenced the structure of several other boards and committees in the local area. He served as town auditor as well as auditor of the local police union. George graduated from Manchester High School and the University of Connecticut where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. He served with honor in Korea during the Korean War. In his professional life, he earned his CPA license and eventually became a lifetime member of the Connecticut Society of CPAs. He first practiced with the firm Rhodes, Rice and Kanehl before starting his own firm, and continued to be a practicing CPA until his death. George was the son of local builder F. William and Metha (Stoltenfeldt) Kanehl. He is survived by his wonderful wife of sixty-four years, Mary-Lee and his children, Karen Beranger, George Kanehl Jr, Robert Kanehl Sr. and his wife Ellen, and Martha Moy and her husband Kenneth. He also has 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by two sisters, Henrietta Kohms, and Erna Jeffre, his brother Bill Kanehl , and his son-in-law Bob Beranger. Calling hours will be held Saturday July 11, 2015 from 3-6 PM at the Watkins Funeral Home, 142 East Center Street, Manchester.
